Alexander Valdez Jr’s work focuses on materials, systems, familial and lived experiences associated with labor and the working class. Alexander’s experiences in manual labor jobs have influenced the way he sees materials, inspiring his intentionality of choosing materials like plywood and diamond plate. During his time working, he also observed the disposability of workers, their unfair treatment, and similarities in which companies operate to benefit a few people at the top. At the same time, Alexander celebrates these materials in his practice by emphasizing their patterns on materials and objects. By isolating these materials and objects, he highlights these objects, making them the center of importance.

Alexander’s multidisciplinary practice allows him to consider various materials to fuse together, creating his own visual language. To complement his visual language, he incorporates text into his practice and, at times, manipulates familiar objects containing text to align with his narrative. Mexican and American pop culture is referenced throughout his work related to his upbringing. Other themes that are found in his work include humor, satire, and violence to name a few that reflect the reality of the world today. Alexander is shaped by both his current environment and the one he grew up in, and these influences are reflective in his work.
